Inspect the External Flaws and Internal Inclusions of Diamonds

A loupe or specialized magnification scope is what an appraiser uses to authenticate diamonds. Unless you are purchasing a flawless diamond, you have the option of seeking outsider’s help to examine the gemstone under 10x magnification method. Note that they do not have external flaws or internal inclusions as examined under the magnification tool. Further, if the blemishes and inclusions match with the information shown on the laboratory’s grading report, then that is an indication of its authenticity.

Measure the Heat Dispersion in Gemstones with Breath Test

Diamonds disperse heat quickly and intensely than diamond simulants, or imitations made up of materials such as cubic zirconia do. You can inspect the dispersion of heat in diamonds using this test. Prior to that, you should clean the surface of the gem using a cloth to remove layers of dirt or oil. Then, place the exposed diamond in front of the mouth and try fogging its surface by breathing out.

Unlike diamond simulants, the genuine gemstone should not get fogged by heat released from breath – at least it should vanish by the time one could even notice that on its surface. On the other hand, cubic zirconia gemstones will typically get fogged up by heat and require time before it could go off the surface. Yet note that this is not a scientifically proven test to measure diamond authenticity, as the conditions in the atmosphere may affect it.

The Best Method to Test the Authenticity of Diamonds

Consumers can even measure if the diamond is real or fake using a specialized tester. Since the heat conductivity of diamonds is superior, the diamond testers with copper probes can be used to measure the extent of temperature sensitivity in the gem. Although this tool can be used to identify strontium rutile or cubic zirconia, it will not help with that if moissanite is tested. That is because that diamond simulant has similar physical properties to that of the real gemstone.
